"Nearshoring" is the sourcing story of the decade — and in categories like basic apparel, the shift is real. Technical lingerie, especially plus size, is a different story.

What nearshoring does well

Short-run replenishment, fast fashion cycles and tariff-advantaged access to specific markets (USMCA for Mexico, EU agreements for Turkey and North Africa). For simple constructions and fast-turn basics, proximity reduces inventory risk meaningfully.

Where plus size lingerie is different

A D–K cup program requires a deep component ecosystem: specialized wire suppliers, graduated foam molders, stretch lace mills with small-lot dye capability, and pattern engineers with full-bust fit experience. That ecosystem — decades deep — exists in Guangdong, China, and cannot be replicated quickly elsewhere.

The practical hybrid

  • Develop and fit in China with a plus size specialist factory — the ecosystem decides fit quality.

  • Consider nearshore replenishment only for proven, simple silhouettes with stable demand.

  • Factor total cost, not unit price: nearshore FOB often hides lower first-pass yield and slower sampling.

For most plus size brands, the winning structure is a dual track: China for engineered styles and new development, nearshore (if viable) for replenishment of proven basics. We regularly support brands running exactly this model.
